Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was an Indian lawyer, anti-colonial nationalist and political ethicist who led India's successful movement for independence from British rule through non-violent resistance, which in turn inspired the movement for civil rights and freedoms worldwide.
He lived from October 2, 1869 to January 30, 1948, on the day of his murder.
Gandhi was born and grew up in a Hindu family in Gujarat, the west coast of India. He received legal training at the Inner Temple in London and was admitted to the bar in June 1891 at the age of 22.
Gandhi's birthday (October 2nd) became Gandhi Jayanti National Day in India and International Nonviolence Day worldwide. Although not formal, Gandhi is the grandfather of India.
