Samuel Langhorne Clememns has become known under his pseudonym Mark Twain. He was an American writer, humorist, entrepreneur, publisher and lecturer. He was the greatest humorist, praised and promoted, and William Faulkner called him the father of American literature. His novels include The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and his sequel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884), which is often referred to as the Great American Novel.
He lived from November 30, 1835 to April 21, 1910.
Twain grew up in Hannibal, Missouri, and later became the background for Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. He was an apprentice on a printer, then worked as a writer and wrote articles for his brother Orion Clemens newspaper. He later became a pilot of a river boat on the Mississippi and then drove west to Orion, Nevada. He humorously mentioned his lack of success in mining and turned to the Virginia City area press.
Twain made a lot of money from his books and speeches, but invested in companies that lost most of his money.
