Martin Luther King Jr. was an American Christian minister and activist who became the best-known SAS leader of the civil rights movement. He lived from 1955 to 1968 when he was murdered. King was encouraged by his Christian beliefs and Mahatma Gandhi's non-violent actions known to promote civil rights through non-violent and civil disobedience.
King led the Montgomery bus boycott in 1955 and later became the first chair of the Southern Christian Leaders Conference. As chairman of the SCLC, he began a struggle against apartheid in Albany, Georgia in 1962 but was unsuccessful and helped organize a non-violent protest in Birmingham, Alabama in 1963. He helped organize the Washington meeting in March 1963 and delivered a famous speech "I have a dream" on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.
On October 14, 1964, King won the Nobel Peace Prize for non-violent combating and resistance to racial inequality. In his recent years, he expanded his focus on fighting poverty, capitalism and the Vietnam War.
King has been awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a celebrated holiday that has been held in various cities and states since 1971. This holiday was set at federal level by law signed by President Ronald Reagan in 1986. In memory of him, hundreds of streets in the United States were renamed. The Martin Luther King Memorial in the National Mall in Washington DC opened in 2011.
